For Michael Kowler, sharing the story behind the numbers to help clients enhance their understanding of their company in order to reach their financial goals, fuels his passion for making a difference.
A partner in the Maryland office, Michael provides audit and assurance services, and tax preparation and planning for privately held and family-owned businesses, as well as non-profit organizations, labor unions and employee benefit plans.
Michael is also in charge of the firm’s business valuation and litigation support services department. In this capacity, he works with clients and their legal team on such matters as matrimonial law, estate and gift tax preparation and planning, corporate and partnership disputes, buy-sell agreements, lost profit damages and professional malpractice cases.
A Passion for Business Valuations
Qualified as an expert witness for valuations of privately held and family-owned businesses, Michael has appeared in the Montgomery, Prince Georges and Howard County Courts of Maryland. He has also prepared valuation reports for clients throughout the United States. He has prepared business valuation reports for a variety of industries, including government contractors, accounting, legal, health care, professional practices, automotive, software technology and retail and wholesale companies. Michael has also provided valuations of goodwill and other intangible assets in compliance with GAAP. In addition to valuations, he has also represented clients before the Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service.
Michael has more than 30 years of tax and audit experience. He started his career at a Washington, D.C. firm as a staff accountant in 1977. He later joined another local firm where he began doing business valuations. In 1990, he joined the Buchbinder team.
An avid speaker on business valuations and litigation support services, Michael often gives presentations at law firms and at Buchbinder’s New York and Maryland locations. In 2013, he spoke at the Maryland Institute of CPAs first Annual Business Valuation Conference.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys reading, crossword puzzles, and traveling. He recently went dog sledding in Alaska and is preparing for a summer cross-country trip to visit the remaining baseball stadiums he has yet to see. A self-described “nerd,” he is always keeping up on the latest tech toys that hit the market.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of Maryland. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the AICPA Forensic and Valuation Services Center, the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. He is licensed to practice in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Florida, Georgia, and Nevada.
