“I enjoy using my knowledge, skills and experience to fine tune an answer for a client.”
An interest in numbers came early for Jan Altman. By the time he was seven years old, his mother already had him pegged as an accountant or a math teacher. When his cousin, who was a CPA, would come to his parents’ house to do their tax return, Jan would ask him questions, intrigued – and everyone agreed – Jan was destined to be a certified public accountant.
A partner in the New York office, Jan has always been driven to achieve. He graduated college at the age of 20, became a CPA at 22, and became a Buchbinder partner at the age of 31.
Jan has more than 30 years of experience providing accounting and audit services for clients in real estate, privately held and family-owned businesses, and employee benefit plans. He provides tax services for partnerships, corporations, individuals, non-profits, as well as, employee benefit plans. Jan also monitors internal controls for publicly traded companies for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and New York Stock Exchange regulations and oversees reports on internal controls of service organizations for use by client auditors.
A self-described audit guy, for Jan, the most enjoyable part of an audit is sitting down with the client with a completed financial statement and audit report in hand to discuss the past year’s results and business plans for the future.
A Firm Achiever
Showing client care and support is essential to the partners at Buchbinder, and Jan shows this by responding promptly to clients and communicating with them about any proposed changes that would affect their business.
Jan first worked at Buchbinder during college, but left for five years to gain experience at a regional and two national firms. He returned in 1984 as a senior auditor. Since then his aim has been to work hard and support the firm in its overall success.
In his spare time, Jan enjoys spending time with his wife, children and granddaughter and rooting for local football teams.
Jan earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and then a Master of Business Administration in Taxation, both from Baruch College, where he was recognized in the Business Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is licensed to practice in Connecticut and New York State.
