Delays Processing IRS Tax Payments
Taxpayers that mailed checks to the IRS may be in the backlog of mail the IRS is still processing due to office closures because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Any tax payments will be posted as the date the IRS receives them rather than the date the Service processed them.
The IRS advises taxpayers not to cancel their checks and should ensure funds continue to be available so the IRS can process them. The IRS is providing relief from bad check penalties for dishonored checks the agency received from March 1 to July 15 due to delays in this IRS processing. Interest and penalties may still apply, though.
The IRS suggests waiting to contact the agency about any unprocessed paper payments still pending due to high call volumes.
